Provenance: Inscribed on t.p.: F. P. MacCabe / Jany 1881. [Francis Peter MacCabe (1817-1897) was born in Dublin and recruited by N.S.W Surveyor General Thomas Mitchell in 1841. MacCabe carried out the first surveys of the Murrumbidgee, Murray and Darling Rivers between 1848 and 1852. He also recorded many Aboriginal place names and language details through his employment of Aboriginal people on his surveys. While Francis was stationed in the Wollongong area, he met and married Jane Osborne, the eldest child of Henry and Sarah Osborne of Marshall Mount. He and Jane built "Russell Vale" near Wollongong and, after leaving the Dept. of Surveyors in 1856, he became the manager of a coal mine owned by Jane's father in partnership with Wallsend. Francis was involved in local politics and became the Mayor of the first North Illawarra Council and served as a Justice of the Peace. He died at his Bowral property on the 27th June 1897. He and Jane had 14 children.]
