This collection comprises design drawings, work books and photographs relating to work completed by Helen Jean Burgess (1926-2018) while undertaking a 5 year diploma course in Design and Crafts at Sydney Technical College, East Sydney, from 1943 to 1947. Under the tutelage of head teacher, Phyllis Shillito, Burgess received practical instruction in various subjects including interior decoration. In June 1948, Burgess graduated from the Department of Art at Sydney Technical College with a Credit in Design and Crafts.
Burgess never practiced as an interior designer but taught design and various art and craft activities to adults for most of her life. After leaving Sydney Technical College, she was employed at the Concord Repatriation Hospital as an assistant to occupational therapists who worked with returned soldiers. Burgess then worked at the Mount Wilga Rehabilitation Centre in the mid-1950s teaching a range of craft activities.
In 1957 Burgess moved to Victoria to teach arts and crafts at the Bendigo School of Mines. When the Arts & Crafts Department at Bendigo closed, Burgess moved in 1973 to teach at the Ballarat School of Mines. Burgess taught a wide variety of craft activities from leatherwork to basketwork, embroidery to batik work, papermaking to silk screen printing. Burgess was active in the Embroiderers Guild Victoria for over 50 years, becoming President of the Ballarat branch for five years. [ML]
