Description:
This picture relates to another watercolour, dated 1848, in the collection of the Mitchell Library, State Library of NSW [DGV*/Sp.Coll./Martens/8]. Martens' account book records the sale of several views of Sydney from Mrs Darling's Point Road, both watercolours and oils, the first in April 1847. [Mitchell Library ZDL MS142] The sale of a watercolour titled 'View Sydney from Mrs Darling's Pt Road' to the merchant James Levick on 20 August 1847 for 5 guineas may be a reference to this picture.
The view is from the heights of Darling Point, with Elizabeth Bay House centre left, Garden Island centre right, the city beyond and the Blue Mountains on the horizon.
