Description:
The two-storey house Ellerslie in the Sydney suburb of Waverley was built ca. 1860 by John Birrell on the north side of Salisbury Street at its intersection with the then Vickery Street. In February 1864 Birrell sold the property to an engineer (and sometime MLA) named Charles James Stevens (1823-1883). Stevens in turn sold the property in May 1871 to Mrs Eliza Barlow and she renamed the house Airmount. The Barlow family sold the property to the Franciscan Fathers in 1902 who established a Christian Brothers school called Waverley College, with the house serving as the Brothers' residence. [ref:. B.T. Dowd and William Foster 'The history of the Waverley Municipal District', 1959.
In late November 1869 Stevens' Ellerslie and George Thorne's house Claremont at Rose Bay were both advertised for lease. (ref SMH 27.11.1869 p.12) Thorne took the lease of Ellerslie for around 12 months. Ellerslie was again offered for lease, or sale, in January 1871 (SMH 14.1.1871 p.12) and this photograph of Thorne family members at the house was probably taken in the last days of their tenancy.
