Description:
Mark Foy's new Piazza store, constructed between 1927 and 1930 to a design by architects HE Ross & Rowe, was in fact a sympathetic extension of the original store opened in 1909. The first store, of two storeys and basement, was designed by architects Arthur McCredie & Arthur Anderson and was partially modelled on the grand Bon Marche department store in Paris. Plans for the building had originally been drawn up by an English firm but were reconfigured after the company's managing director, Francis Foy, took Anderson with him to England, Europe and the United States to see the latest developments in construction of commercial buildings. The building was clad in white glazed bricks, yellow faience mouldings and decoration and was topped with a turreted mansard roof. The success of the business led to construction of two other buildings in Elizabeth Street and finally to the conversion of the Piazza into a six storey building with basement.
