Description:
This artist's impression looking west from Hyde Park towards St James' Station and Market Street, shows two of David Jones' three stores of the late 1930s. On the right is the Elizabeth Street store designed by H E Budden & Mackellar and completed in 1927. On the left is the Market Street store designed by Mackellar & Partridge. The Elizabeth Street store was modelled on New York's 'Saks Fifth Avenue' emporium (1924) and became David Jones' flagship store. The first stage of the Market Street store to six-storeys was completed in 1938; the additional four-storeys were added after World War II.
