Description:
Looking south along George Street, the Liverpool Street corner on the right foreground shows a glimpse of the Sir John Young Hotel, Daniel O'Shea the proprietor; on the near left is the Hotel Cecil and to its right Anthony Hordern & Sons' recently completed New Palace Emporium. Anthony Hordern & Sons' business had been previously located at the Haymarket in several different buildings on and around George Street. A major fire gutted many of the buildings in 1901 and managing director Samuel Hordern resolved to move to a site with better fire protection and under one roof. When the new five-storey Albert Bond-designed building was opened in 1905 (a sixth storey was added in 1914-15), it stretched across more than half a city block and three street frontages: George, Pitt and Goulburn Streets. Many of the materials used in the building including iron castings, polished marble, timber joinery and embossed steel ceilings were produced and/or finished at Hordern's own factories. The building was demolished in 1987 and is now part of the World Square complex.
