Description:
Fairfield at Cambewarra in the Shoalhaven district of New South Wales was the family home of Thomas and Mary McKenzie who had come to NSW from the Scottish highlands in 1839. In 1879, when both Thomas and Mary were in their eighties, their 14-year old granddaughter, Kennina (Tot) Thorburn, was sent to housekeep for them at Fairfield. She stayed there for 14 years, caring for her grandfather after her grandmother's death in 1886 until he died in 1892. Tot also provided domestic care for her uncle Kenneth McKenzie after he joined the household in 1886. On 19 May 1893 Tot left Fairfield and joined her mother's household at Meroogal in Nowra.
The date inscribed on the back of the photo, 20th May 1893, was Tot's first day as a resident at Meroogal. She recorded the taking of the photograph in her diary for Friday 12 May: "Lovely day. We had the house photographed, Uncle & I standing together & Mother and Geo. in the buggy with Lottie".
