Description:
This watercolour (attributed to Thomas Wingate) is a loose sheet from a Terry family album purchased from Helen Gardiner, nee Lloyd, granddaughter of Edward Terry (1840-1907) of Eastwood House. Edward was the fifth and youngest child of John Terry (1806-1842) of Box Hill and Eleanor nee Rouse (1813-1898), later Mrs Thomas Wingate.
The watercolour portrays a family group standing/seated at a cloth covered table, four of the five sitters identified below in pencil: ‘Edwin Elizabeth Phebe [sic] Emma’. A handbag, some paint blocks? and a bell are scattered on the floral pink cloth. The Rouse family members are, left to right: Edwin Stephen Rouse (1849-1931); Elizabeth (Lizzie) Rouse, later Campbell (1845-1931); Mary Phoebe Rouse, later Dangar (1847-1931); Emma Rouse, later Batty (1843-1928) and Richard Rouse (1842-1903), the five children of Edwin Rouse (1806-1862) and Hannah Terry Rouse nee Hipkins (1819-1907), grandchildren of Richard Rouse (1774-1852) and Elizabeth nee Adams (1774-1849).
