Description:
Ecclesbourne at 17 Ocean Avenue, Double Bay, Sydney, was built in the 1840s by a businessman named Thomas Whistler Smith (1824-1859) on land that was then part of the Glenrock Estate, Darling Point. The property was later owned by his brother Eustace Smith (1825-1872) who sold Ecclesbourne in 1857 to Sydney solicitor James Norton (1824-1906). Norton was an ardent horticulturist and vice-president of the Horticultural Society of New South Wales in the 1870s. According to his entry in the Australian Dictionary of Biography he had a garden party at Ecclesbourne each spring when his South African bulbs flowered.
