Description:
Ecclesbourne at 17 Ocean Avenue, Double Bay, Sydney, was built in the 1840s by a businessman named Thomas Whistler Smith (1824-1859) on land that was then part of the Glenrock Estate, Darling Point. The property was later owned by his brother Eustace Smith (1825-1872) who sold Ecclesbourne in 1857 to Sydney solicitor James Norton (1824-1906). Norton made extensive alterations to the house in the 1870s, including the addition of a tower which served as the entrance hall on the Ocean Avenue side of the house.
