Sarah Elizabeth Hoddle album
Description:
This is a loose pencil drawing contained within an album created by/for Sarah Elizabeth Hoddle in 1835. Sarah was the only child of surveyor Robert Hoddle (1794-1881) and his first wife Mary Staton. Only a small number of pages in the album have contributions, and the majority of these, verse and sketches, have been contributed by James Charles White (1809-1894), Sarah's future husband. It is possible that the album may have been J C White's gift to Sarah since one of his sketches is dated August 1835. James Charles White was an employee of the Australian Agricultural Company at Port Stephens and two of his drawings in the album depict AA Company views: a view of Tahlee, the residence of the AA Company Commissioner; and a view of the harbour at Port Stephens. Sarah died at Stroud, near Port Stephens, on 3 October in 1841, 10 days after the birth of her third son William Robert White, these events recorded by her husband in the album. In December 1841 White became superintendent of Glanmire station at Bathurst. This sketch may relate to that property.
