This image is one of a series of photographs taken on 'Anniversary Day, 26 January 1914 at a Surf Carnival on the local beach organised by the Wollongong Life Saving Club. The Illawarra Mercury reported on 27 January 1914 that 'upwards of six thousand persons' attended the carnival, crowding the beach and occupying vantage points on the embankment along Cliff Road, Wollongong.
