Description:
This watercolour sketch is pasted in on page 49 of a leather-bound folio album containing 62 sketches and watercolours and 33 early photographs, many signed by or attributable to Thomas Wingate (1807-69), former British army officer and second husband of Eleanor Terry nee Rouse (1813-1898).
The subject of the sketch, Major Richard Carruthers entered the British army as an ensign in the 26th Regiment in 1814, transferring to the 2nd, or Queen's Royal Regiment of Foot as a lieutenant in January 1825, becoming captain in April 1829, major in February 1836 and lieutenant colonel in January 1847. For much of this time he served in the East Indies, including the opening campaigns of the First Anglo-Afghan War. Thomas Wingate served under Carruthers during his own career in the Queen's Royals and made several sketches of his fellow officers during the time the regiment was in cantonment at Belgaum (now Belagavi) from late 1836 until late 1838. The cupid with arrow in the upper right hand corner of the sketch may be an allusion to Carruthers' forthcoming nuptials. He was married to Margaret Dingwall at Belgaum on 17 May 1838 by the Reverend Morgan Davies, a chaplain in the service of the East India Company. [MM, June 2017]
