Description:
This pencil sketch is pasted in on page 51 of a leather-bound folio album containing 62 sketches and watercolours and 33 early photographs, many signed by or attributable to Thomas Wingate (1807-69), former British army officer and second husband of Eleanor Terry nee Rouse (1813-1898).
The subjects of the sketch, Lieutenants Thomas Weston Easterbrooke Holdsworth and William Henry Stisted, were both officers in the 2nd, or Queen's Royal Regiment of Foot, stationed in India at the time the sketch was made by Lieutenant Thomas Wingate, a fellow officer in the 2nd Foot. It was probably drawn while they were sharing the experience of British army life in cantonment in Deesa, India, from 1840-1841. [MM, June 2017]
