'The Stockade, Vaucluse' was one 34 pictures exhibited by Eirene Mort at the inaugural exhibition of the Australian Painter Etchers Society in June 1921. Among the others was an etching of 'The Stables, Vaucluse' and one of 'Elizabeth Farm House, Parramatta'.
Eirene Mort made her first etching of the ruins depicted in this image in 1912. They are of a building on the Vaucluse House estate known as the convict barracks constructed around 1829 in the Gothic Revival style of architecture. The barracks was sited on a ridge, visible from the harbour and from the house, where it formed an eye-catcher or folly in the landscape. The ruins of the building were cleared away in 1912.
