Looking south-west along Johnston Street Annandale, from Johnstons Bay, around 1888 / photographer unknown
1 photoprint : sepia toned ; 11.1 x 16 cm.
The photograph shows a group of buildings associated with the building contractor John Young, a prominent figure in nineteenth-century Sydney. These are the large buildings shown in the centre left of the photograph: Claremont (still building), Kenilworth, Highroyd, Hockingdon (popularly known as 'the witches houses'), Oybin and The Abbey. Two houses without spires, visible between Hockington and Oybin, are Oreba and Rozelle. Young's own house, Kentville, is probably the single-storey building seen on the extreme right of the photograph. The ruinous structure in the foregound, near the water's edge, may be the remains of Cowan and Israel's soap and candle works.
