Alan Evans was an enthusiastic amateur photographer who worked as an accountant for the firm of Davis Gelatine (Australia) Ltd, the firm established by George Francis Davis (1883-1947). In 1933 Davis and some colleagues took over the lease of Cockatoo Island Dockyard in Sydney from the Commowealth government, forming a new company, Cockatoo Docks & Engineering Co. Ltd.
