Alan Evans was an enthusiastic amateur photographer who worked as an accountant for the firm of Davis Gelatine (Australia) Ltd, the firm established by George Francis Davis (1883-1947). In 1933 Davis and some colleagues took over the lease of Cockatoo Island Dockyard in Sydney from the Commowealth government, forming a new company, Cockatoo Docks & Engineering Co. Ltd.
The "River Hunter" was the second of two standard steamships constructed for the Australian Shipbuilding Board. For further details reference: 'Cockatoo Island : A History' by R.G. Parker 1977 and 'Cockatoo Island: Sydney's Historic Dockyard' by John Jeremy 1998.
