Description:
These premises were probably at 25 George Street West, Sydney and the gentleman standing outside is likely to be the proprietor, Mr. F. Costra, fruiterer. Next door, at no. 23 are the premises of Phillip Costello, butcher and at no. 27 were the premises of E.W. Beard, upholsterer and bedding manufacturer, which were demolished between 1898 and 1899.(Sands Directory 1898-1901). The signs on Mr. Costra's shop tell us that he sells tobacco products (cigars and cigarettes) as well as Nicholls Tasmanian dandelion tea, lemon squash and summer drinks. In the shop window can be seen fruit and vegetables including carrots and potatoes and through the door shiny tomatoes and possibly eggplants are displayed. By 1902 the premises are listed in Sands Sydney Directory as belonging to Galletta and Butta, green grocers.
