Lancashire-born William Quinton Mason was a friend of the Thorburn family of Meroogal, Nowra. His name appears frequently in the diaries for 1892 and 1893 kept by Tot Thorburn and he is referred to in family stories as having been, briefly, Tot's fiance. In the mid 1890s he was manager of the Homeward Bound mine on the Yalwal gold field, south of Nowra. In 1898 he left New South Wales for the Klondyke but later went to the Boer War.
