The house called Brenchley in Bayview Street Lavender Bay, Sydney, was built in 1838-1839 for First Police Magistrate Henry Croasdaile Wilson. In 1839 Wilson, under investigation for corruption (including the use of police constables as labourers in the construction of his house) sold the property to colonial civil servant Captain Hutchinson Hothersall Browne. Browne was appointed Water Police Magistrate for Sydney when the office was established in 1840, becoming Registrar of the Court of Requests at the end of 1843 and then re-appointed to his previous position of Water Police Magistrate in 1847. He held the post of Immigration Agent from 1851 until his return to England in 1861. Browne sold his Lavender Bay land to John Carr in 1867 and it formed part of a consolidated property known as Carr's Estate. Following Carr's death in 1881 Brenchley was sold to Frederick Wilson Uther and was the home of the Uther family for many years. [ref. James Bradley; Bob Williams]
