Verso carries the printed trade label of the "American and Australasian Photographic Company / Sydney Office 324 George Street" and Beaufoy Merlin's printed signature and is numbered, in pencil: 53018.
The Sydney Morning Herald published a prospectus for a new newspaper, The Illawarra Mercury, in August 1855 and the first issue was published on Monday 8 October 1855.
The photograph has been dated to 1871 based on advertisements in the Sydney Morning Herald 6 May 1871 and 1 August 1871. In the former Beaufoy Merlin announces that Charles Bayliss will represent the American and Australasian Photographic Company in Wollongong from 8 May, weather permitting. In the latter the company announce that they have photographed every house and public building in Wollongong (and in several other towns.)
