Description:
The artist, William Prinsep, came from a family which served in India for several generations. His father John Prinsep (1746-1830) had been a merchant with the East India Company and traded in indigo and chintz in Calcutta between 1771 and 1778. William lived in Calcutta between 1817-1842, working first with the Calcutta firm of Palmer & Co, before establishing a highly profitable mercantile, banking and agency house with his brother George in 1830.
