Notes:
'This is a remarkable, many-faceted work; an artist's picture of a vanished or vanishing England, a lively narrative of personal adventure and - above all - a masterly evocation of the blend of melancholy, horror, genial extravagance and elegant conceits, in which, during the seventeenth, eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the temperamental vagaries of the English aristocracy of birth or wealth found expression. The plan of the book is simple and effective. Miss Jones divides her subject into twelve classifications and illustrates it with photographs and with drawings of her own made on the spot. The final section, 'Follies and grottoes listed by counties', is an invaluable gazetteer; the preceding ones not only discuss all the romantic varieties of these overgrown, ruinous and tragically neglected eccentricities, but also their fashion and decline up to the present day.' -- from the back cover.
