Sovereign Hill is the name given to the 'living museum' complex developed and run by the Ballarat Historical Park Association in Ballarat, Victoria. It comprises the Red Hill Gully Diggings and the Sovereign Hill Goldmining Township, which set out to tell the story of the ordinary man's quest for gold in the 1850s, paralleling the development of Ballarat during the first decade of its existence after the discovery of gold in 1851. Also part of the complex are the Mining Museum, which traces the development of mining techniques from the 1860s, and the more modern Gold Museum, which houses a collection of gold coins and artifacts.
