Known to its patients as the 'Sidney Slaughter House', the General 'Rum' Hospital in Sydney provided health care for convicts from 1816 to 1848.  By examining typical treatments, administration and standards of care, hygiene and conditions, illnesses,
death, dissection, burial, and phrenology, this paper presents a history of the hospital through the experience of its patients.
