This volume is a scrapbook/friendship album created by Melina Julia Thorne, fifth of the six daughters of Bristol-born Sydney merchant George Thorne and his wife Elizabeth Ann (nee Bisdee) of Claremont, Rose Bay, Darcey Hey. Hey, Castle Hill. Melina
was born at Claremont on 1 December 1852 and died at Darcey Hey on 27 July 1887. The album contains pencil drawings, watercolour sketches, prints, engravings, pressed flowers, print ephemera, albumen photographs, verse, word puzzles, and other written contributions from family members and family friends. Most of the dated entries span the decade 1868 to 1878 but some contributions to the album have been added after Melin Thorne's death. Some items pasted into the album also predate her birth, including a small lacy card that is inscribed: "This once belonged to Aunt Elizabeth Lovering Thorne, born Sept 6th 1812 & died April 19th 1831".
A number of the pencil sketches may be attributed to Melina's sister Rosalie Ann Thorne, including a sketch of a house called 'Ellerslie' in Waverley, a house called 'Roseneath' in Parramatta and a house called 'Sandhill' in Tasmania..
