Description:
This north-eastern view of Rouse Hill House, taken during the occupancy of Hannah T. Rouse (1819-1907), shows the two-storey kitchen wing added to the house by Hannah in 1865 following the death of her husband Edwin Rouse (1806-1862) and is attributed to Parramatta architect and builder, James Houison.
Edwin Rouse (1806-1862) had inherited the property following the death of his father Richard Rouse in 1852 and the elegant canopied verandah, along with other additions commissioned by Edwin and Hannah, had been added by Houison in 1857-58. The early 19th century stables building (demolished ca.1876-7) can be seen on the far right of the picture.
Provenance:
One of 151 photographs in an album inscribed: Alice Rouse. Alice Rouse, nee Hayle (died 1919) married William Charles Rouse in Mudgee NSW in 1874. He was a son of George and Elizabeth Rouse and a grandson of Richard Rouse (1774-1852), builder of Rouse Hill House.
