Description:
This photograph is one item within a small album containing 97 carte-de-visite photographs. The album appears to have been mostly compiled by Thomas Wingate (1807-1869) since Wingate's pencilled identifications appear on the album page below many of the photographs. It also includes a number of photographs taken by Wingate himself.
Thomas Wingate was a sketcher, amateur photographer & army officer, born in France in March 1807, second son of Captain George Thomas Wingate RN of Stirling, Scotland, and Thomasina, nee Devonshire. He entered the British army in May 1826, serving in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) 1828-1832 and then in India 1835-1842 as a lieutenant in the 2nd or Queen's Royal Regiment. He retired with the rank of Captain in 1846, arrived in Sydney in 1852 and in 1854 was commissioned as a Major commanding the 1st New South Wales Rifle Volunteers. He also served as a magistrate on the bench of Sydney's Water Police Court and Central Police Court from 1855 to 1861. In 1856 he married Eleanor Terry, nee Rouse, daughter of Richard Rouse, builder of Rouse Hill House between Parramatta and Windsor. Wingate lived at Eleanor's house, Percy Lodge, Wylde Street, Potts Point from 1856 until his death in 1869.
The album includes several photographs of members of the extended Rouse and Terry families. This portrait depicts Nina Beatrice Rouse, the elder of the two daughters of Edwin Stephen Rouse and his wife Bessie, nee Buchanan. Edwin Stephen was one of Eleanor Wingate's nephews. [MM, December 2017]
